January 2008 President’s Message

Road Runners,

In the January newsletter I wrote about firing our club up for our 50th anniversary in 2009.   It’s time for my first report on our activities.

The first step was to assemble the Board of Directors and ask that board to select a goal for 2008.  I’m happy to say that we have 22 of our 485 club members on the board or in support roles.  The group met in January to select “Increasing Active Participation” as the 2008 goal.  Simply stated, this translates to getting more of you out to a RMRR event. We’re a running club, but participating doesn’t have to mean the Trophy Series – it’s any RMRR event or any place were RMRR members gather as a running community.  Examples include the traditional events like the Trophy Series, fun runs on Tuesday and Saturday and Track practice.

We’ve also tried a few new things.  In 2007, we sponsored teams in the Bolder Boulder and Colfax Marathon.  Also, a group of us went to the US Cross Country Nationals in Boulder.  Those events were fun for those participating and a great way to show our support of running.  We’re planning the list of activities to support in 2008.  In January, club members Eric Greene and Doug Smith are coordinating a group to go to dinner and then to the movie “Spirit of the Marathon”.  If you’re interested in joining us, see Doug’s email to the Denver Runner’s newsgroup or email him at runontrails@gmail.com for more info.

We’ll be looking at other types of events for 2008.  Where should the club focus our energy – training programs or unique races or running-related social activities?  Do we need some marketing materials to support our efforts?  How involved should we be with other local clubs?  We’re debating all of these ideas.

You can help us be talking to a board member at the next event you’re at.  Tell us why you’re active in RMRR.  What would you do differently to get more people out to races or fun runs?

I look forward to talking with you more before & after the next TS and at Spirit of the Marathon.  Look for more info as we work to “Increase Participation to Celebrate 50”.
