May 2008 President’s Message

Hi Road Runners,

Our May race on the new course at Stapleton was a big success. Despite competing races, we had 82 runners, five more than last year. The increase in participation was small, but that’s okay. It’s a step toward this year’s club goal: increasing participation in our events.

Race directors Stephanie Struble and Brian Bergevin as well as course designer Adam Feerst received compliments on the course. It was well laid out, well marked, and was open enough that people could see their competition. The race’s starting line was marked by two of the club’s new Bowflag banners. These sunshine-yellow banners with the runners and RMRR logo are easy to spot, helping members find us & drawing the attention of passers-by. We think the professional look will help us attract attention – helpful as we work to increase participation and membership.

The May race also provided a way for club officers to seek opinions about the 50th anniversary logo. As all of you know, RMRR celebrates 50 years running in 2009. We’re going to order promotional items for 2009 and begin planning next year’s events. The first step was to create a logo that captures the spirit of the club. The board has the results of the voting and will take that information into consideration when we select the logo at the June board meeting. We’ll close the loop with all of you by bringing the new logo to the June trophy series race and to our other events.

The trophy series continues with the June race, a 2.4 mile run around the lake and bike path at Stone House Park. Last year, Scott Kukel set a course record for the men flying past people on the last lap. Whether you’re fast or slow, join us for the race and the raffle afterward. We received a supply of Attune wellness bars that we’ll raffle off after the race.

Two of the other club events for 2008 have started:

Track practice continues to run every Wednesday at 6:15pm at Heritage High School. We’ve got a small group participating right now, but as the weather warms up, I think we’ll hit the 20+ participants we had last year. Heritage is located at 1401 West Geddes Ave. in Littleton. That’s south east of Santa Fe & Prince. Please check the website for directions and for the workout schedule.
